A complete reference for every setting in BudgetViz — what it does, when to use it, and how settings relate to each other.
How settings are organized. Settings in BudgetViz are grouped into categories. Some settings depend on a parent setting — they appear grayed out until the parent is enabled. For example, the currency symbol position setting only becomes active once you enable custom currency formatting. This guide follows the exact order you see in the app.
Control how BudgetViz looks. Choose between light and dark mode, pick a color accent, or let the app follow your device's wallpaper colors.
Controls the overall appearance of the app. System Default follows your device's current setting, switching automatically between light and dark. Light and Dark lock the app to that specific mode regardless of device settings.
System Default · Light · DarkWhen enabled, BudgetViz uses your device's Material You color scheme — the palette automatically derived from your wallpaper. This overrides the manual theme color accent below. Available on Android 12 and later.
Toggle · Default: OffChoose a manual color accent for the app's theme. This gives you direct control over the primary color used throughout the interface — buttons, highlights, charts, and more. This setting is disabled when dynamic color is turned on.
Color pickerProtect access to your financial data with device authentication.
Require biometric authentication (fingerprint or face) or your device PIN when opening BudgetViz. Off disables the lock entirely. Every time requires authentication on every app open. The timed options (1, 5, or 10 minutes) only require authentication if the app has been in the background longer than the chosen duration. BudgetViz checks that your device supports authentication before allowing you to enable this.

Which day begins a new week. This affects weekly budgets, weekly report periods, and any time the app groups data by week. For example, if you set this to Sunday, a "weekly" budget cycle runs Sunday through Saturday.

This is especially useful if your salary arrives mid-month — setting the start day to your payday aligns your budget cycles with your actual cash flow. For example, setting this to the 25th means a "monthly" budget runs from the 25th of one month to the 24th of the next.
1 through 31Controls whether time period boundaries are shifted to avoid weekends and holidays. No adjustment uses exact calendar dates. Adjust to previous business day moves the boundary earlier if it falls on a non-business day. Adjust to next business day moves it later. This is useful if your financial cycles are tied to working days — for example, if your salary always arrives on the last business day of the month rather than a fixed date.

Holidays work together with the business day adjustment setting — any day marked as a holiday is treated as a non-business day when adjusting period boundaries.
Opens holiday managerHow these work together. If your month start is set to the 1st, your business day adjustment is set to "previous", and January 1st is a public holiday (Saturday), BudgetViz would shift the January budget start to the preceding Friday, December 31st.
Manage exchange rates and custom currencies for multi-currency tracking.
Opens the exchange rate viewer where you can see current rates, manually update individual rates, or fetch the latest rates from the internet. Exchange rates are used whenever BudgetViz needs to convert between currencies — for example, when a budget includes accounts in different currencies, or when calculating portfolio totals.
Opens exchange rate viewerWhen enabled, BudgetViz automatically fetches the latest exchange rates once per day in the background. This keeps your multi-currency calculations up to date without manual intervention. When disabled, rates only update when you manually refresh them from the exchange rate screen.
Toggle · Default: OffOpens the custom currencies manager where you can add and manage currencies that aren't in the standard list — such as cryptocurrency tokens, loyalty points, airline miles, or any other unit of value you want to track. Custom currencies work throughout the app just like standard ones, including in accounts, transactions, and reports.
Opens custom currencies managerKeep your data safe with manual and automatic backups to Google Drive.
Enables Google Drive as the storage destination for your backups. Turning this on for the first time triggers a Google authorization flow — you'll be asked to grant BudgetViz permission to access a dedicated app folder on your Drive. All backups are stored in this isolated folder; BudgetViz cannot access any other files on your Drive.
Toggle · Default: OffEnables scheduled automatic backups. When active, BudgetViz creates a backup at night according to the schedule you configure in the automatic backup settings. Requires the "schedule exact alarms" permission on Android 12 and later — BudgetViz will guide you to the system settings if needed.
Toggle · Default: OffOpens a sub-screen where you configure the details of your automatic backups: how often to back up (every night through every 4 weeks), how many backup files to retain (5 through 60), and whether to receive notifications on successful or failed backups. This setting is only available when automatic backups are enabled.
Opens backup detail settingsOpens the full backup management screen. From here you can create a manual backup on demand, browse your existing backups (both local and on Google Drive), restore from a previous backup, or delete old backup files. This is also where you go to transfer your data to a new device.
Opens backup managerRestoring a backup replaces all current data. When you restore from a backup, your existing accounts, transactions, budgets, and other data are replaced with the contents of the backup file. Consider creating a fresh backup before restoring an older one.
Stay on top of your finances with notifications for due transactions, daily nudges, and budget alerts.
When enabled, BudgetViz sends you a notification when an upcoming transaction is due but hasn't been paid yet. This is useful for staying on top of bills and scheduled expenses. Requires both the exact alarm permission (for precise scheduling) and notification permission.
Toggle · Default: OffA daily notification to remind you to log your transactions or pay any overdue ones. When enabled, two sub-settings become available: the reminder type and the reminder time. Requires both exact alarm and notification permissions.

Time pickerGet notified when one of your budgets is exceeded or at risk of being exceeded. When a budget's health status changes to a warning or critical state, BudgetViz sends a notification so you can take action. Requires notification permission.
Toggle · Default: OffAbout permissions. Several reminder and notification settings require Android system permissions to work. When you enable one of these settings, BudgetViz checks whether the required permissions are granted and guides you to the appropriate system settings screen if they're not. If you later revoke a permission through Android settings, BudgetViz automatically disables the affected setting the next time you open the settings screen.
Customize how numbers, currencies, and time zones are displayed throughout the app.
Master toggle for custom currency formatting. When off, BudgetViz uses your device's default locale for formatting amounts. When on, you gain manual control over the symbol position, decimal separator, and grouping delimiter through the three sub-settings below.

Before · AfterThe character used to separate whole numbers from decimals. Common choices are a period (1,000.50) or a comma (1.000,50), depending on your region. You can enter any single character. Only available when custom currency formatting is enabled.
Text input · Default: "."The character used to group digits in large numbers for readability (e.g. the comma in 1,000 or the period in 1.000). You can enter any single character, or leave it blank for no grouping. Only available when custom currency formatting is enabled.
Text input · Default: ","Set a fixed time zone for displaying transactions and reports. This is useful if you travel frequently — instead of transaction times shifting with your current location, everything is shown in your home time zone for consistency. Opens a searchable time zone picker.

When you mark an unpaid scheduled transaction as paid, this controls which timestamp is recorded. Keep original scheduled time preserves the date and time the transaction was originally scheduled for — useful for keeping your records aligned with expected billing dates. Use actual payment time stamps it with the current date and time — useful when the actual payment moment matters more.
Keep original scheduled time · Use actual payment timeTransfers in BudgetViz consist of two linked transactions — money leaving one account and arriving in another. This setting controls what happens when you pay one side. Pay both transactions automatically marks both the outgoing and incoming sides as paid. Pay current transaction only marks only the one you're interacting with, leaving the other side unpaid.
Pay both transactions · Pay current transaction onlyWhen enabled, BudgetViz automatically marks unpaid transactions as paid when their scheduled date arrives. This removes the need to manually confirm each payment. Requires the exact alarm permission on Android 12+ so that payments fire at the correct time. When enabled, two sub-settings become available: the payment strategy and payment notifications.
Toggle · Default: OffControls which transactions are eligible for automatic payment. Opt-in means only transactions you've explicitly marked for auto-pay will be processed automatically — everything else stays manual. Opt-out inverts the default: all transactions auto-pay unless you've explicitly excluded them. Always on processes every transaction automatically regardless of individual settings. Only available when automatic payment is enabled.

Toggle · Default: OffChoosing a payment strategy. If you're cautious and want full control, start with Opt-in and selectively enable auto-pay for recurring bills you trust. If most of your transactions are predictable, Opt-out saves time while still letting you protect specific transactions. Always on is best when you use BudgetViz primarily as an analytics tool and want all scheduled transactions to resolve without interaction.
Customize which insights appear on your dashboard.
Opens a multi-select dialog where you can enable or disable individual insight types. Insights are the smart cards that appear on your dashboard — things like uncategorized transaction alerts, overdue transaction reminders, budget period summaries, budget exceeded or at-risk warnings, and unusual spending spike alerts. The summary shows how many insight types are currently active (e.g. "5 of 5 enabled"). Disabled insight types are hidden from the dashboard entirely.
Opens multi-select dialogControls how many previous periods are averaged when generating chart comparison lines. Higher values produce a more stable baseline that smooths out one-off anomalies.

Each toggle adds or removes a small label chip that provides quick context without opening the transaction detail. Turn off the ones you don't need to keep your lists clean and focused.
Displays the category and subcategory assigned to each transaction. Default: on.
Displays which account the transaction belongs to. Default: on.
Displays any tags attached to the transaction. Default: on.
Displays a label when the transaction is a transfer between accounts. Default: on.
Displays a label for transactions that are scheduled but not yet due. Default: off.
Displays a label for transactions that are past their due date but haven't been paid. Default: on.
Displays a label for transactions that are part of a recurring series. Default: on.
Displays a label for recurring transactions that were skipped. Default: on.
Settings that control how BudgetViz handles imported data and deep link integrations with external automation tools.
When enabled, BudgetViz automatically assigns a category to imported transactions if the confidence level is high enough. The app learns from your existing categorization patterns — for example, if you've always categorized transactions with "Netflix" in the description as Leisure → Subscriptions, new imports matching that pattern will be categorized the same way. When disabled, all imported transactions arrive uncategorized.
Toggle · Default: OnControls when BudgetViz asks for your confirmation before creating a transaction from a deep link. Always confirm shows the transaction editor every time so you can review and adjust the details. Only if missing data creates the transaction silently when all required fields are provided in the link, and only opens the editor if something is missing. The second option is best for fully automated workflows where your deep links always include complete data.
